Feeding New York State: Billions of Pounds of Food

Do you know that, in America, we throw away about 40% of the food we produce? Perfectly great food. Billions of pounds of food. Food that could help feed hungry people. But as of January 1, a new law will require supermarkets, restaurants and other big food generators to separate and donate edible food and send scraps to an organic composter.

To illustrate the point, and to offer assistance to the large food generators impacted by the law, Dan Egan, executive director of Feeding New York State, volunteered to have, not a billion pounds of food, but a couple of thousand at least, dumped on his head.
